My brother’s wife just gave birth to a new born, and we’re hoping to get them something. She is Japanese, and it occurred to us that we have no idea what kinds of gifts, if any, are traditional for new mothers in Japanese culture. Any ideas?

I have Japanese friends. When my son was born in Janurary they gave me a bell shaped like a pig. This is the year of the pig and I think they would be honored and surprised if you gave them something that symbolizes that. You can get something at your local Asian store even the Asian grocery stores have stuff. Good luck!

I think Chinese count the years like that not Japanese. I look this up it said to give toys, clothes or cash a week after a health baby is born and never present parents with a gift who’s baby is not health. Never give a gift in sets of four because four is occosiated with death. Never wrap a gift in white because that is also associated with death. and Japanese consider it rude to open a gift in front of you. Wrapping the gift is also very important. hope this helps It probably won’t be that formal because she is your sister in-law
